My letter to My Egg Donor
6 Kasım 2021
If I’m on birth control, may I give my eggs?
6 Kasım 2021My Experience with Egg Donation
I had been contemplating for a few years whether or not egg donation was something I could or perhaps should do. aloI had it on my mind for a long time, but there were so many questions and so many things I didn’t know that I kept putting it off. So I was watching a program one morning about a woman who had utilized a donor egg.
I don’t recall the entire event, but one thing is certain: her emotion and thankfulness stayed with me to this day. ” If I have the power to make someone as happy as this human being, why am I not doing it?” I wondered to myself at the time. So I took out my laptop and began searching the internet.
Egg donation
I stumbled across Egg Donor Europe and filled up and submitted an application. It all started with a phone interview, during which I was able to learn more about the procedure and ask any and all questions I had. That was one of the most interesting discussions I’ve ever had. She began by telling me about her personal experience and narrative.
She had donated several times before, so she was well-versed in the procedure. So She put my mind at ease fully. Then she gave me the opportunity to ask questions. We talked for at least an hour–it was as though she knew who I was! It gave me a lot of confidence in my choices.
We hung up, and I immediately dialled my husband’s number, and we had a lengthy conversation about it. He wasn’t happy about the “no sex” part, but it was a little price to pay for the gift I was able to offer someone, and he was eager to assist and support me in any way he could. I took an online test, had a phone interview with a doctor, had my blood work done, and was well on my way to really starting the donation procedure after making the decision to move forward!
Feelings
I was quite nervous when I initially arrived to TWEB. I knew what to expect from the call, but I was still nervous about what I was getting myself into. Andrea met me right away and had me fill out some paperwork before taking me in to begin blood test. Something about her calmed both my mind and heart.
Lisa saw me after I finished my bloodwork for an ultrasound and medication distribution. Lisa has such a welcoming personality that I immediately felt like I’d known her for years! TWEB is incredibly fortunate to have these two ladies on board! Lisa sat down with me and went over all of the meds with me, including how and when to take them.
She went over everything in detail with me and even provided me with links to videos that demonstrated how to use them. At first, I was still a little taken aback. “How am I going to remember it?” I couldn’t stop thinking about it. They do, however, include a handy calendar that will remind you when and how to take everything up until the retrieval date.
The next day I suppose to start my medication. I was a little nervous because it was the first time I had ever given myself a shot. I honestly believed my spouse would have to do everything for me! However, It was surprising because it was too simple I was so nervous when I first attempted to insert the needle, but I was so happy when it went in and I didn’t feel anything! “I can DEFINITELY do this!” I exclaimed. It would sting for a few seconds or pinch a little more than the previous time, but it was never, ever terrible.
During my donation process
I returned to TWEB approximately four or five times for bloodwork and ultrasounds, and each time was a delight! I was in and out in a flash with these ladies. They realized I needed to get back to work, so they always accommodated my schedule and allowed me to come in first! Lisa would let me know if I needed to adjust my meds or keep them the same about 2-3 p.m. on such days (once she received the test results).
I could feel my ovaries become a little more painful as we got closer to the retrieval, but nothing too horrible! PMS symptoms (headache, moodiness, aching boobs, etc.) were all I could think about. At my last session, they give me trigger shot instructions. This shot had to be taken at a certain time, and then you had to do an ovulation test at a certain time (Lisa emails the times). Also, I knew it was critical to take these photographs and tests at precise times, so I set alarms on my phone to make sure I didn’t forget!
I arrived on the day of retrieval and was whisked away to change and get started.
I never had to wait as I would in a conventional doctor’s office because it was always so pleasant. So I was led back to the retrieval room after changing into a TWEB shirt and some cute soft socks. This day was a little more difficult for me–I was bloated and my tummy was sore, but it wasn’t too horrible.
I was more concerned about how I would react to being sedated! This was the bit that worried me the most. Before he started hooking me up, the anesthesiologist walked in and made small talk. He’s a fantastic doctor who made me feel entirely secure. I felt safe knowing I was in good hands. He made me laugh a few times as well!
I was walking back to the recovery room before I knew it. Lisa escorted me out the door, sat me in the small bed, and handed me a heating pad. When I arrived, my partner was waiting for me. She made me sit for approximately 30 minutes while she checked my vital signs and discomfort levels. I couldn’t believe how wonderful I felt! So I expected to want to go home straight after and to be in pain, but I wasn’t! I couldn’t believe how amazing I felt!
Time to return home
We returned home, and I fell asleep for the rest of the day. It was wonderful to peacefully rest and relax. I was given pain relievers, but all I required was a couple of Tylenol when I started cramping, which was no worse than my usual period pains. I felt a little swollen for a few days (maybe 2-3), but then I received my period and everything was back to normal!
From the beginning, the process was a joy. I’ve donated three times thus far, and I intend to continue until they tell me I can’t! It gets better every time because I get to see Andrea and Lisa, two of my favourite people! I would do it again and again because each donation went well and according to plan. The only thing I regret is that I didn’t do it earlier! It’s a very short and simple process, especially given the gift you’re providing.
I’m very grateful that I found TWEB and the amazing people who work there. They will make you feel at ease and will always be available to answer concerns, put your mind at ease, and remind you of how wonderful you are for giving such a wonderful gift.
